How people use AI

People are using LLMs like Lumen in many different ways: to ask questions, brainstorm ideas, explain tricky topics, write drafts, plan activities, summarise information, and even help with coding.

For many people, AI is becoming part of everyday life, not just something used at work.

Students might use it to understand homework, adults might use it to plan emails or trips, and creative people might use it to come up with new ideas.

Last September, OpenAI released the results of studying over 1.5 million conversations on how people are using ChatGPT. They broke it down into these categories:

Interestingly, about 70% of the conversations were for personal reasons and not work-related.

Over 700 million people use ChatGPT every week, which is almost 10% of the world's adult population.

It's replacing Google for some. Using ChatGPT to search for information grew from 14% to nearly 25% of all conversations in just one year.

When ChatGPT launched, over 80% of users had typically male names. By 2025, more than half of active users are women.

These survey results show that AI chatbots have really become integrated into people's daily lives even outside of work.
