Why does location matter?
Data centres need massive amounts of electricity.
If they're built near renewable energy sources like wind, solar or hydro they can use clean energy which helps fight climate change.
Data centres in cold countries can use outside air for cooling which saves energy and money.
Data centres use millions of litres of water for cooling so in dry places this can compete with farmers and homes. In wet places, there is less impact on water supplies.
Data centres are often placed near big cities to make more people's internet faster.
