Who makes the LLMs?

There are hundreds of LLMs now but a handful of companies are responsible for the most powerful and widely used ones.

Companies developing AI:

• OpenAI: started with ChatGPT in 2022. Now backed by Microsoft.
• Anthropic: was founded by ex OpenAI researchers who wanted to focus on AI Safety. They make Claude.
• Meta: who also own Facebook and Instagram. Their Llama models are open-source and they are very popular for running local AI.
• xAI: is owned by Elon Musk. Grok is built into X (formerly Twitter) and is known for having fewer guardrails or protections.
• Google DeepMind: Gemini is built into Google Search, Gmail, and Android. Google has more data than almost anyone on the planet.
• Microsoft: Copilot is built into Microsoft tools like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Edge and Windows. It uses OpenAI's models but is packaged for work, school and productivity tasks.
