Lesson 6: Behind the Scenes
How much energy for a typical text prompt?
According to a recent study released by Google last August, a typical text prompt run by their chatbot Gemini uses 0.24 watt-hours of electricity, which is about the same as running a microwave for 1 second or a TV for about 9 seconds.
It also uses about 0.26 millilitres of water, roughly 5 drops, and creates about 0.03 grams of CO₂.
This may not sound like a lot but given there are roughly 2.5 billion prompts per day on ChatGPT alone this can add up.
Generating video takes a lot more energy but there are no official numbers available on this.
