Real progress is being made to make data centres use less electricity and power to reduce climate change effects.

Examples of sustainable technology

• Smarter cooling: new liquid cooling systems pipe coolant directly to the chips instead of blasting cold air at entire rooms.
• Renewable energy deals: companies are signing long-term contracts to buy solar and wind power or building their own solar farms.
• Reusing waste heat: some companies are pumping their waste heat into nearby homes, offices or swimming pools to heat them for free.
• More efficient chips: AI chip makers are designing new processors that do the same calculations using less electricity.
