Lesson 6: Behind the Scenes

Rules for American data centres

The United States has no single national rule. Each state does its own thing, and many have no protections at all.

When a tech company builds a data centre and needs new power infrastructure, the cost often gets added to everyone's electricity bills nearby.

Some states are introducing new laws to fix this, and Congress has proposed the federal SHIELD Act to stop families paying for big tech's energy costs but no national solution has passed yet.
