Every time you use AI, you're sharing data: what you type, and sometimes your location, voice or face. That data can be used to train future AI models, target you with ads, or be sold to third parties.

Unlike talking to a friend, there's no guarantee what you share stays private. Details you share today could sit in a database long after you've entered them.

Some AI chatbots will have settings to "opt out" of having your data used to train future AI models, which means you choose not to share your prompts and conversations for future training. For example, the image below shows the settings in ChatGPT where you can opt out of having your data used to train future AI models. This is usually turned on when people first sign up and has to be turned off to opt out.
