Lesson 3: Trust and AI

Personalisation vs training

So if training is fixed, how does a chatbot feel like it "knows" you? That's personalisation and it's completely separate.

When you share your name, interests, or reading level, the chatbot uses that to shape its replies in the moment.

Some apps remember you across sessions (like ChatGPT's memory feature), but this isn't the AI “learning” in any deep sense, think of it like a teacher reading your student file before class. It helps them tailor their approach, but it doesn't change what they know.

So what does the chatbot know about you?

Chatbots can pick up two types of information to personalise your experience: your metadata and your past messages.

Metadata is background detail the app can detect, like your approximate location from your IP address (city or country).

Past messages are more direct. If you've been asking about soccer, the chatbot might weave in soccer examples without you asking.

In these lessons, Lumen doesn't remember you between separate conversations, but it does remember context within the same session.
