Writing good prompts
Prompts are the messages (input) that we send to GenAI. We get responses back (text in LLMs, images with image models).
Prompt engineering is a fancy way to say that we want to write prompts that effectively get us the answer we want.
The details that we include in prompts can impact how useful or helpful a response will be. For example:
“Give me tips for giving a speech”
vs
“Give me 3 quick tips on how to manage nerves before giving a 3-minute speech in class. Keep the tips practical and focused on body language and breathing”
Specific vs vague prompts
It is usually better to be more specific in prompts than to be vague, particularly when looking up information or learning.
For example:
“Tell me about Ancient Egypt”
vs
“Tell me about Ramesses II and the highlights of the period of Ancient Egypt he lived in”
and
“Tell me about rainfall”
vs
“Explain the main causes of rainfall and why patterns are different in different places, at a level appropriate for a high school student”
