Learning Simple Patterns
In the 1990s, developers created AI that started to learn patterns and be more adaptive, rather than using fixed rules like the AI in the 1960s and 80s.
AI learning patterns from data like this is called machine learning.
For example, a developer could create AI and train it using data about house sizes and house prices. The AI would guess a mathematical rule about the relationship between these and use this rule to predict a house's price based on its size. The AI then adjusted its guess based on data. That's why it was also known as predictive machine learning.
The AI didn't "understand" the data like a human would, it just looked for patterns in the numbers.
