Lesson 2: Different Types of AI
Images
AI image generators can create entirely new pictures just from a prompt. For example, if you prompt an AI to draw "A cat surfing on the moon", it will generate a brand new image matching your words, like the one shown below.
To do this, the AI doesn't just search the internet and copy-paste an existing image. Instead, it has been trained on millions of different images and their text labels. By looking at all these examples, it learns the visual patterns of what a "cat", "surfing", and the "moon" actually look like. When you give it a prompt, it uses this understanding to create something completely new and unique from scratch.
Some examples of tools for generating AI images include:
- FLUX
- Google's Nano Banana
- Adobe Firefly
- Canva AI
- Stable Diffusion
The quality and detail of the AI images has improved a lot in the last few years. We've included an example below, where an image with the prompt 'A cat surfing on the moon' has been generated using an older AI image generation model. The progress that has been made with newer AI image models is amazing, isn't it?
On the next page, you will see some more examples of images generated with AI and consider how close they are to real photos and drawings these days.
